Winner of an EPA Environmental Quality Award, the O.A.R. Green Dream was created in the Summer of 2008 out of the band’s desire to provide a healthier concert environment on their tours. Because touring with music production equipment presents incongruent circumstances for an environmentally sustainable way of life, the band faced a unique challenge involving their tour’s logistics. With their staff and volunteers from numerous organizations, the band has been able to overcome many obstacles like program implementation and activation, on-site collection methods, fan outreach and acceptance.

  • Promote Environmental Awareness in the everyday lives of fans attending O.A.R. concerts
  • Work to off-set carbon emissions from the band’s tour
  • Work with venues in each touring market to establish and practice proper recycling protocols at every show
  • Engage fans at each show to discuss greening options, encourage recycling and distribute prizes to participants
  • Collected over 36,000 lbs of recyclable materials over the course of 6 summer & fall tours (2008-2011), with a high of just over 21,000 lbs in 2010.
  • Worked with hundreds of volunteers, including fans of the band, as well as employees from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Environmental Conservation & the Green Dream’s exclusive sponsor from 2008-2010, SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation)
  • In 2011, O.A.R. partnered with UPS to create a more sustainable summer concert tour. UPS measured the band’s existing carbon footprint and developed a transportation strategy to increase fuel efficiency and offset emissions. With their assistance, O.A.R. neutralized over 67 metric tons of co2 during 28 tour dates.

Greening (in my words, the act of being as environmentally sustainable as possible) is a choice, not something that can be forced upon people. As a band, we’ve always sought to inspire people with positivity, however we do not force this, but present it to them through lyric and song. The Green Dream takes this same approach by providing information and resources to individuals in an environment that they have already chosen to be in. We simply hope that they recognize it is important to us as a band, and that we would love for them to walk away from our concerts feeling that importance personally.
